Around this time, as cars gained gasoline engines, electricity became common, and the work week shortened to 5 days, new leisure time activities opened up. For one thing, there could be Saturday and Sunday activities because that time was now available. For another thing, "motoring" for fun became common. This might include a camping trip up into the mountains, as the west was beginning to be taken up and outdoorsy, wilderness areas were becoming shorter in supply.
There was a city boom, as people found factory jobs with the coming of the Industrial Revolution and moved to the city. With advancements in technology, streetcars and automobiles replaced horse-drawn carriages, and with them went the manure problem. Unmarried woman did occasionally work outside the home, but most spent their time cooking, cleaning, and helping out with household needs. These jobs would mostly be factory jobs at clothing industries, rather than customer interaction jobs, because it wasn't yet normal for women to be working. |
