Realism:
Meaning: The quality or fact of representing a person, thing, or situation accurately or in a way that is true to life.
What it depicted: Everyday lives, the life of the working class.
The ideal: Showing things as they are, showing the country without idealization, accurate representation.
When it came about: 1840 to the late 19th century. It was a reaction to and rejection of Romanticism.
More: Because of its raw depiction of sometimes less noble aspects of life, it shocked the wealthy and middle class people.
Impressionism:
Meaning: A literary or artistic style that seeks to capture a feeling or experience rather than to achieve accurate depiction.
What it depicted: Scenes of leisure. For example, cafes, hotels, gardens, seasides, and the like. This made towns with opportunities to capture these scenes popular for painters.
The ideal: "Canvases were meant to be direct translations of perceptions experienced in nature" (From NBMAA "American Impressionism Beyond Boats and Parasols") This means, they wanted to get the emotions that they were seeing onto the canvas, not so much the picture.
When it came about: 1874 was a turning point for the beginning of impressionism. That was when a bunch of impressionist artists got together and made an exhibition. The style is still in use today.
More: Impressionism was viewed as unfinished, because you could see the dots and brushstrokes all over the place. In the 1800's, to be an Impressionist artist was synonymous with "incompetent."
Post-Impressionism:
Meaning: A variant of impressionism experimenting with form and color to represent emotion.
What it depicted: Not so much playing with light and color as an even freer self expression means.
The ideal: The goal was to represent emotion in the art instead of actual things. Items in the paintings fit into deeper meanings.
When it came about: 1880's to 1900's. It was a push in a new direction off of Impressionism.
More: It was an exaggeration of Impressionism.
